LINDSAY ELLIOTT Houston lost one its most clever wordsmiths
unexpectedly on Monday morning, the 30th of March 2009. Age 54, he was

mother, Merilyn Elliott, sister, Lisa Elliott, friend, Aimee Comparet,
niece, Sarah Wheeler, nephew, Andrew Wheeler, aunt, Carolyn Watts,
cousin, Robin Palmer and partner, Joan Taliaferro, all of Houston.

entities such as Mark Logan Advertising, The Belcher Group, The
Williams Group/William Hinz Advertising, Media Concepts, The Houston

his family and good friends from all walks of life. The memorial

Houston lost one its most clever wordsmiths Monday morning, March 30
in a tragic, untimely death. He was 54 years old. He is survived by his
mother, Merilyn Elliott, sister Lisa Elliott, niece Sarah Wheeler, and
nephew Andrew Wheeler all of Houston. He is preceeded in death by his
beloved father Earl Elliott. As father Earl made his mark with his
community involvement and leadership in the Houston Golf Association,
Brett made an equally impressive mark in the world of Houston
advertising.
A native Houstonian and 1973 graduate of Memorial High School, he
was a champion debater. He won or placed at numerous debate
competitions, including First Place at the South Houston
Cross-Examination Debate Championship in 1972. More recently he was
active in the Houston Chapter of the Urban Debate League, helping inner
city and disadvantaged high school students become championship quality
debaters and students.
Elliott earned his B.S. in advertising from the University of Texas in
Austin (class of ’77) during the glory years of the seventies. Brett
described his degree as light on the science part, heavy on the B.S.
He then went on to work for agencies and media entities such as Mark
Logan Advertising, The Belcher Group, The Williams Group/William Hinz
Advertising, Media Concepts, The Houston Post, The Hinckley
Group/Hinckley and Slade and BRSG where he served in advertising
related capacities as account services, promotions, public relations
and copywriting.
Most recently he was senior copywriter, Lopez Negrete Communications.
He got a kick out telling people that although “he no habla español” he
was a gringo copywriter at the second largest independently owned
Hispanic marketing agency in the country.
While producing award-winning work for several of Houston’s most
prominent advertising agencies throughout his career, Elliott also dug
into the trenches of the Houston Advertising Federation now
AAF-Houston, serving terms in the 1990s and most recently through 2011
on the Board of Directors, chairing committees, working on Houston’s
ADDY shows, judging other shows around the country and acting as script
writer for three AAF National ADDY shows. Brett was the model of a new
ad club award, the Spirit of HAF, and received that distinction in
1997. The Spirit Award recognizes AAF-Houston members who have
contributed significantly to the organization in a selfless manner.
He loved loud rock music and soft, ole-school jazz. He could quote you
the liner notes from any album from the 70's, loved introducing his
niece to all kinds of music and attended plays at the Alley Theatre
regularly with his mom. Most of all he loved his good friends from all
walks of life and broke the hip creative rules by driving a mini van
most of his life. As Brett would end his notes and e-mails – “Peace,
love…..now turn up the music.”
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
at the George Lewis Funeral Home, 1010 Bering Drive, Houston, TX 77057,
713-789-3005. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 4 at
2:00 p.m. at the same address.
A Brett Elliott Scholarship Fund has been set up by the American
Advertising Federation-Houston. In lieu of flowers the family asks that
donations be made to AEFH (Advertising Education Foundation of
Houston), In Memory of Brett Elliott, P.O. Box 27592, Houston, TX 77227.
HOUSTON (KTRK) --
Katie McCall Firefighters found a body inside a southwest Houston townhome after
putting out the flames. Authorities are now calling the incident a
homicide investigation.
The fire broke out after 6am on Pagewood near Woodchase. It began as a
fire investigation, but what detectives found inside the charred
townhouse is now the focus of a homicide investigation.
They
say the man who lived there was murdered and that someone set the fire
to cover it up. Police say the victim's body shows signs of a struggle
and they found what may be blood on the door. But they do not know
exactly how the victim died.
"There are definitely signs of trauma but again, because of the fire
inside, it is really difficult to make a determination at this point,"
said Detective CP Abbey with Houston Police Homicide Division.
Neighbors called 911 early this morning when they smelled smoke coming
from the unit. Firefighters say they arrived within a few minutes to
find a victim dead on the first floor. HPD homicide detectives believe
there may have been a violent confrontation that someone saw or heard,
possibly early this morning.
"We know he was alive on Saturday
doing laundry, but this fire just happened now. It's difficult to make
that determination -- was he was he alive the entire time? We don't
know," said Detective Abbey.
Neighbors who knew the victim are
surprised. They say he lived here for three years and that he was a
friendly man who frequently hosted parties at his home.
"It's sad, very sad," said one neighbor.
"(He was a) very nice guy, very personable. He was great with the
neighbors, I would hear. I helped him at my store recently. We just
kind of joked on what a small world it was," said neighbor Arthur
Warnock.
Police say they are looking for witnesses right now.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at
713-222-TIPS.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

JONI, it's nice that you have faith in your friend, but the evidence says it all. His DNA was found at the site, a witness places him at the scene of the crime. Honey, tattoos don't make a person, neither does his criminal past, but evidence is EVIDENCE. May God have mercy on his soul for taking a beloved friend and colleague. If you know something we don't, come forward. I leave it in the court system and God's hands. Brett we love you!!! I miss you more than ever. Peace. Love. JUSTICE.

I hope the REAL suspect if caught and charged. Just because the suspect in custody now has a criminal history and tattoes all over, DOES NOT MEAN HE IS GUILTY. No one that knows Michael De Loach would EVEN think it POSIBLE that he could or would do such a vicious thing. And to a human and to Brett Elliott. PLEASE, you all need to continue looking for the REAL murderer here because it is not Michael!! BUT I know this will all be proven SOON. GOD BLESS ALL OF BRETT'S FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
It's time for anyone who talked to or saw Brett on Saturday March 28 or Sunday 29 to let Crime Stoppers/Homicide know. No detail is too trivial. It may help catch his killer. Suspicious vehicles, sounds, Brett's whereabout might reveal from where he could've been followed, at what time, etc. Please help.
Late in 1977, a skinny, articulate, intelligent, freshly minted, UT ad grad showed up in my office looking for his first job in the biz. Having a marvelous grasp of the obvious, I hired him after a 15 minute interview. Brett quickly became an integral part of my small firm, and provided the creative intellect that kept our customers in the fold. Over the 30+ years I knew him, he became one of my closest friends. I will forever miss his quick wit and infectiious laugh. Peace. Love. Brett.
What a sad, horrible and tragic loss of such a vibrant, sweet, kind person. My heart goes out to his family and all who loved him. I pray that this hidious crime is solved and offer my help in any way to assist in finding those responible for his murder and untimely death. I hope this can stay in the news to generate tips to the police. God bless his soul, and my prayers are that God protects him in heaven. It's true what they say...the good die young. Too sad! Kim
Brett was my Brother’s closest friend. He is in shambles over this, as are you all, all who loved Brett. Your industry is all about getting attention. Get the attention now of our Mayor and City leaders. Not just to solve this crime, but to stop the disintegration of this community, which has been getting worse in the last three of four years. After all the tears, use your talents and channel the pain into action, for Brett, and for us all. It will only make his music sweeter
Brett Elliot enjoyed AD club inspiring many young professionals and mentoring students making a career in advertising. Brett blessed me with his friendship for 11 years and I will miss him.
Brett, dear soul, wherever you are you already know you carry with you the sighs and tears of hundreds of heavy hearts you touched deeply. Can't stop the movie projector in my mind with the thousands of clips from 25 years of having you so regularly in my life. May your contagious smile and laughter carry us to the brightest thoughts and feelings of you. Thanks for always cheering me on. FLY ON MY SWEET ANGEL
Brett, my friend, you are already missed. Although we had not seen each other for years, my heart is heavy with sadness. I am shocked, lost, and speechless. Goodbye, dear friend...............
Brett was truly a gentle soul. I was lucky to work with him and enjoyed some wonderful off hours social time. His love of music was one of his great passions. I hope that he currently touring Rock & Roll Heaven. We will miss you Brett.
Brett was one of my long time running buddies and I will miss him. We saw so much music together from the onslaught of Punk to Jazz. Ironic thing is that he was finally going to get me to a Dead concert in May in Chicago. A part of me is gone forever but his memories are clear. One of the attributes I will always remember of Brett is that he could always find the good part of any person in the world, a characteristic I wish I had. WHAT A LOSS! I worked with Brett @ BRSG for several years. He was a great guy that always kept me laughing. He was always quick with humor. I will miss him and his love of music! This is truly a loss. I am still in disbelief that something like this could have happened to such a GREAT guy.
Brett was a very close friend of my older brother and we enjoyed one another's company at parties and get-togethers at my brother's home throughout the last 25 years. Brett, your life was robbed from you and from us as well. No doubt you will be writing single-line ad copy for God to promote heaven for the rest of us.
Met Brett when I went to work at the Post 25 years ago and our friendship was deep and immediate & that never changed. Always generous with his time, knowledge, laughter, music, wine, family, friends, compliments and loved helping and supporting others to stretch their wings. Thanks to you being you my kids and 3 granddaughters will miss you almost as much as I will. Brett you've been a rare soul and I will carry you with me as I always have, in my heart, for the remainder of my life. Hopefull

Never without a smile and the best of friends……. Pop Music
all the words have left me...he knows he had my heart...he let me see his soul......so much I will miss...middle of the night phone calls..many years of a wonderful lover and friend.....so much left unsaid....Sweetie....tears all over the keyboard
Brett - you were one of the only people I met who knew and still appreciated the great transformative music of the 70's and 80's...patty smith, the clash, deborah harry, the sex pistols, etc. You were one in a million...and knew a good bottle of Pinot when you saw one. We will miss you.
Brett, you gave so much to not only me but everyone that was lucky enough to know you. Greyhounds, the clash, 43 ways to where black jeans in style, ice on bourbon street, decanted wine... You and Ross influenced me into the humble, warped, obnoxious, positive man I am today. I thought of you often and will walk lighter knowing this earth is not blessed with your presence anymore. Watch over us all. Soul Train my friend, SOOOOUUUUL TRAINNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!
This is unbelievable. Why should such a wonderful person be the victim of this horrific act of violence? Brett was a dear man, and I will truly miss him. God Bless.
He was a good man who loved life and to have it taken away senselessly is without comprehension. I will miss his infectious laughter and will always remember how he lived, not how he was taken. God bless his soul.
Dearest Brett, beautiful spirit that will be forever missed ... May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, May the rains fall soft against your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hands.
Losing Brett is one of the saddest moments I can remember. He was the essence and sole of the Houston Ad community and will be so greatly missed. So hard to say goodbye to an old, dear friend.
From AAF-Houston: Sadly, we announce that our friend and colleague, Brett Elliott, was found dead yesterday morning in his condominium. Details and official identification are pending but family has confirmed this tragedy. We will send out more information as soon as it is available.
