This morning, Mary Elford did not wake up. Apparently, she passed away in her sleep last night. While we don’t yet know the exact cause of her untimely death, we do know that she will be missed. The world is a lonelier place without her.
For those of us who had the privilege of knowing or working with Mary, we will remember her as someone special who always put the needs of others before her own, always eager to take the time to comfort someone in need, assist us and our clients in any way that she could, dispense phone numbers from her near photographic memory to those who would call her rather than calling information, talk to anyone about anything, and generally nurture everyone around her, Mary was a friend in the truest sense of the word.
Slow to anger and quick to forgive, Mary lived her life with grace and unselfishness. I suspect that it had to do with what she perceived as her mission here, at home, at work, at play. Mary always made sure everyone else was OK. She was a sort of "Earth Mother" to so many of us. In a time when people are busy pursuing individual accomplishments, Mary took pleasure in the connection she had with others- her children, grandchildren, co-workers, pool buddies and long time friends. She never met a stranger and had the uncanny ability to make you feel comfortable as soon as you entered the room. Totally comfortable in her own skin, it was difficult not to feel the same way in her presence. She genuinely cared about all of us, and we will miss her dearly. Though we’re still somewhat in a state of shock at South Coast this morning, we wanted to let you know about Mary, since she meant so much to so many of us.
As soon as we hear more from her family regarding funeral arrangements, we will pass on that information. In the meantime, just take a second to remember Mary’s smile and her kind words. Maybe we can try to emulate her special spirit in our own relationships with others. I think she’d like that.
Sincerely,
Everett, Steve, Bill, Marco, Kevin, Mike, Casey, Cody and the South Coast gang
