HOUSTON, TX – Nov. 12, 2009 – Houston-area residents and non-profit organizations will gain greater Internet accessibility through brand new websites from the Sixth Annual Accessibility Internet Rally for Houston (AIR Houston) competition on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Farish Hall (KIVA Room) at the University of Houston beginning at 8 a.m. The Rally ends at 5 p.m. with the awarding of the winning design teams. In all, each non-profit organization will receive a brand new website valued at between $5,000-$7,500 for free.
Houston-area web design professionals and non-profits were paired together in late October, but no design work has been done yet. That happens at the actual competition, which is a one-day event where the web design professionals build new websites from scratch with the help and participation of the non-profit organizations. The partnerships for this year’s competition include:
- APRA Greater Houston: Creative Brain Trust
- Baytown Christian Fellowship: Whiteboard Labs
- Bird Dog Research Resources: IDEA InteractiveClayton Library Friends: Pop Labs #1
- Frost Town Historic Site: Rounder Graphics
- Miss Wheelchair America: Pop Labs #2
The AIR Houston competition is focused on bringing website access for individuals with disabilities and helping out non-profit organizations that need a new website for their constituents.
“AIR Houston has a tremendous lineup of both professional design groups and non-profit organizations who desperately need a fresh website to reach more people in the Houston area,” explained Christine Hollinden, Chair, AIR Houston 2009, and CEO of Hollinden Professional Services Marketing. “This event is about highlighting the best of Houston where people are helping people.”
The AIR competition has two categories; Stock Car and Formula One. The Stock Car class sites are judged on basic accessibility, like text alternatives for pictures and the quality of link text, while Formula One entries are judged on advanced technologies like multimedia, data tables, flash, and scripted applications.
