News pioneer, Eyes of Texas creator Ray Miller dies

By JENNIFER LEAHY Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle Sept. 28, 2008, 10:10AM Ray Miller also hosted Ray Miller's Texas and was known by all as a devotee of the Lone Star state. Ray Miller, legendary lover of Texas and a founding father of television news, died Saturday morning. The creator of the popular television show The Eyes of Texas was 89. Friends lauded his intellect, wit and passion for the state. He had incredible intellect, practically glowed in the dark, said KPRC-Channel 2 reporter Phil Archer, hired by Miller in 1976 at age 25. And to be hired by Ray Miller was like winning the lottery. He was just the best. Miller, a familiar face and voice for generations of Houstonians, viewed journalism as a higher calling and as public service, Archer said. Miller grew up in Fort Worth and moved to Houston to start his radio career at KPRC. In 1951, KPRC bought Houston's first television station, which became Channel 2. MICHAEL KLEINHENZ, 56, passed away July 11, 2008. Mike graduated from the U of Cincinnati in 1974 with a B.A in Radio and TV. One of Houston's most talented Voice-Over Artists, Mike was also a talented guitarist/singer/songwriter and exceptional athlete in numerous sports. He is remembered most for his creativity and humor, and gave inspiration to all who sought that from him. Mike's wealth was measured by the love of his many friends and large family and by his pursuit of freedom of thought, expression, spirituality and understanding of the human condition. He will be greatly missed. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Kleinhenz, and his brother, Rusty. Lyle Metzdorf, 1935 - 2002 Lyle Metzdorf, 67, Houston, formerly of Independence, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, in a fire aboard his sailboat while docked in Charleston, S.C. Mr. Metzdorf was born Aug. 16, 1935, in Kansas. He was recognized as a creative and inventive personality in the advertising agency business. He founded one of the largest advertising agencies in the Southwest. He was a 1953 graduate of William Chrisman High School. He excelled at sports and attended college with an athletic scholarship and later the Kansas City Art Institute. After leaving the military, he began his career as a gag writer and graphic designer with Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. Relocating to Houston, he opened an advertising agency. He was known for producing creative ads and for being the mentor of numerous art directors as well as writers. His company produced many pro bono campaigns for community and charitable organizations.
