Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP), Houston, TX 77006
Speaker: Bruce Block

Event Details:

VISUAL STRUCTURE SEMINAR with Hollywood Guru and USC Professor BRUCE BLOCK!

Just as a writer is concerned with story structure, a moviemaker must be concerned with visual structure. Visual structure is the only “language” available to directors, cinematographers and production designers yet it is often misused or simply ignored.

The key to using visual structure is an understanding of the basic visual components: space, line, shape, color, tone, movement, and rhythm. Using these basic visual components, you can control an audience’s emotions and create a unique visual style for your production. But the most critical and difficult part of using visual structure is relating it to the story. This seminar demonstrates how you can control the complex relationship between story and visual structure. Bringing these two worlds together is the key to making great movies, TV shows, commercials and video games.

This seminar uses hundred of visual examples from movies. The principles discussed can be used in live-action or animation for any format including motion pictures, television, or computers. The seminar is designed for producers, writers, directors, concept & storyboard artists, cinematographers, lighters and visual design teams. The seminar relates all of the visual concepts to practical production and bridges the gap between theory and practice.

If you’ve ever dreamed of going to USC film school, take advantage of this opportunity to take a condensed version of a required course that Bruce Block teaches at the famed USC School of Cinematic Arts! This is not just art theory! Bruce Block will take the vision in your head and make it the best, give it the most impact, so you can take your audience on the ride of their lives and build the career you’ve always dreamed of!

LIMITED SPACE! Registration required! Don't miss out on this unique event.'

 Saturday, June 30th - Sunday, July 1st

Tendenci® CMS Platform Helps Advance Connect Australia’s Global Community

Tendenci now available as an open source product

HOUSTON, May 1, 2012 – With the goal of connecting the estimated 1 million Australians living abroad, the nonprofit organization, Advance, is using Tendenci (www.tendenci.com) content management system (CMS) as a key component of its community engagement toolkit. Tendenci CMS, recently released as an open source product, is designed specifically for non-profit organizations (NPOs) and associations. It powers Advance’s redeveloped and improved website, http://advance.org/, which was designed by Publicis Mojo in Sydney.

Tendenci CMS makes it easy for the eight-person staff of Advance to add and edit website content, including text, videos, event listings and job openings without needing to know html or hassling with a webmaster. Tendenci’s video plugin makes it possible for Advance to feature its latest online video content from other sites into a single “Advance TV” page. A color coded events calendar makes it easy for Advance members to quickly find and register for events in their part of the world.

“We currently have 22,000 members around the world, but our new website positions us to be able to reach and connect every Australian expatriate so we can leverage the community as a powerful knowledge network and resource,” said Jess Kelso, manager, online engagement for Advance. “With a community that spans over 90 countries the membership management task is massive and Tendenci CMS has been up to the challenge.”

The clean, inviting design by Publicis Mojo plays heavily on the use of ripples that represent the Advance global community and all of the members within it. The new website launch and rebrand coincides with the organization’s 10th anniversary.

Earlier this month, Schipul released Tendenci as an open source product. This gives NPOs such as Advance a greater sense of control. According to the 2011 Nonprofit Data Ecosystem Report from the Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN), over 90 percent of Nonprofits surveyed manage their website content on either an open source or custom in-house built CMS. The Tendenci Open Source download is available at https://github.com/tendenci/tendenci.

Tendenci currently powers hundreds of websites for nonprofit organizations and associations around the world, including Houston Technology Center (www.houstontech.org), Metropolitan New York Library Council (www.metro.org), and Think LA (http://thinkla.org/).
Lopez Negrete Communications Scores Double Win at 2012 ARF Ogilvy Awards

Lopez Negrete Communications, Inc., the nation’s leading and largest independent Hispanic owned and operated agency, won the Gold in the “Multicultural” category at the American Research Federation (ARF) 2012 David Ogilvy Awards ceremony on March 28 in New York City for its “Enciendete FiOS” campaign launched for the agency’s largest client, Verizon Telecom. This is the fourth year that the Multicultural Award category has been offered by the ARF in this competition. Lopez Negrete won the Gold for the first two years the category was created, first for Bank of America and subsequently for Wal-Mart Stores, both long-standing legacy clients of the agency.

“We consider this is an important award because it once again illustrates our keen ability to unearth and activate relevant consumer insights that lead us to the development of solid strategy and powerful creative executions that tangibly deliver on our client’s business goals,” said Alex López Negrete, president, CEO and CCO. “I could not be any more proud of this team. This was not an easy assignment, and they unlocked many secrets about the rapidly evolving Latino technology consumer.”

The research efforts informed the development of a strategy, target segmentation, and, ultimately, a comprehensive campaign that drove product understanding and awareness, encouraged the purchase decision among a value-conscious target, and exposed them to the FiOS experience in culturally relevant ways. The efforts were implemented in two separate waves. The first wave of research yielded the foundation of the new FiOS target, allowing the agency to explore their needs, wants and adoption barriers as they related to technology for communication and entertainment purposes. The second wave was a comprehensive phased research plan designed to understand how to position FiOS among this target in order to increase awareness and drive acquisition.

Lopez Negrete is no stranger to the ARF Ogilvy Award winner’s stage: The agency has won three out of four Gold awards in the Multicultural category. However, most notable was the additional recognition the agency gained by receiving the Award for Research Achievement for demonstrating extraordinary success solving a critical business challenge. The Research Achievement Award, as bestowed upon the agency by the American Research Federation, is considered in the industry the highest research honor an agency can earn.

“The Ogilvy Award celebrates the critical role that research has in unveiling the yet untold advertising stories and, better yet, the most compelling way to connect to our target. One of the most satisfying things about the “Enciendete FiOS” campaign has been to see the positive impact this campaign has had on quantitative business performance metrics. The other is that it’s clearly the result of a fully integrated body of work, all born from the same strategy that contains mass media, digital/interactive, events, retail and community relations elements – yet another example of how the secret of Hispanic marketing is in touching the consumer in a channel agnostic, seamless manner,” said Eugenia Archetti, research director of Lopez Negrete Communications.

The ARF Ogilvy Awards honor advertising research initiatives that were instrumental in developing outstanding marketing and advertising campaigns that achieved marketplace success. The criteria for the awards are based upon the application of research in four creative marketing elements: strategy development, creative development and refinement, the direction of media exposure, and demonstration of marketplace effectiveness. Named after advertising legend David Ogilvy, the awards annually celebrate his spirited advocacy of research in making good advertising better.

Clayton earned a BA from the University of Houston in 1981.Clayton career in the film industry as camera assistant included commercial films, training films, commercials, and on the sidelines for Houston Texans home games for NFL Films. His love of photography continued from work to pleasure - where a camera was seldom far away.Clayton had a life long interest in Marksmanship, starting with Saturday morning trips to a shooting range, continuing with many trips to the woods to practice or just enjoy the quiet of the forest. Clayton enjoyed the history and artistry of firearms, being a 25 plus year member of the National Rifle Association and the Houston Gun Collectors Association.Clayton was very involved with his daughter's life. He enjoyed watching his daughter play soccer over several years and several conferences.
survey

Objectives: Only in Houston has been asked to put together a list of agencies with lubricants experience. (See below)
"I lead the lubricant branding and marketing efforts for a major energy company here in Houston. Presently we utilize the advertising agency services of a firm outside of Texas. Question: Through OIH, can you provide me a directory of Houston-based advertising agencies that have experience in the lubricant industry? We are not currently in search of an advertising agency but would like to seek information should we decide, at some point, to proceed in that direction. Please respond via e-mail."
Only in Houston has prepared a brief survey to help this marketer choose wisely should they decide to look within Houston for their next agency of record. Please help us make her job easier by responding thoroughly and quickly.
To ensure absolute confidentiality, all completed surveys will be compiled by Jay Hagins of the Houston Ad Federation and sent via email to the interested marketer.
I thank you for your participation.
